This book explains the geological history of Shropshire, a story based on Shropshires incredible journey, lasting 500 million years, from the Antarctic Circle through the Tropics and across the equator to our present latitudes, a distance of 12,000km. This journey, often near to plate boundaries, has resulted in Shropshire displaying rocks of ten of the twelve recognized geological periods of time.

No such area in Britain, or perhaps the world, displays such a variety of rock types in such a small area. Shropshire was visited by some of the great pioneers of geology and many fundamental terms and principles of geology are based on the countys geology.

Today numerous geologists and students at all levels of knowledge visit the area. The beautiful Shropshire scenery is a direct reflection of the underlying geology and attracts vast numbers of visitors.
